How You Can Help
In addition to helping raise money for domestic violence shelters in your area through your participation in the beauty brands “It Takes Guts” campaign, you can become involved on a personal level by donating directly to your local shelter, by providing supplies for shelter clients and by volunteering.
Volunteers are always needed. Most shelters offer different levels of volunteerism. You could do anything from answering a hotline to watching children at a center while shelter clients attend group sessions; from office work to fundraising; from representing the shelter at volunteer fairs to donating legal aid — it’s up to you!

Do you know someone in trouble?
Steps you can take to help a friend:
- Talk in a safe place.
- Express your concern for the person’s safety.
- Don’t underestimate the danger.
- Take the time to listen, and believe what you hear.
- Don’t expect change overnight (be patient and continue to offer support).
- Don’t criticize or judge your friend’s decisions.
- Encourage the person to make her own choices, but urge her to talk to someone who knows about dating violence.
- Let the person know that many other people are in abusive situations. Offer to find an agency that can help.
